Carlos Sainz will start the British Grand Prix from pole position after a fine performance in a soaking qualifying session at Silverstone.

The Spaniard channeled his father's rallying abilities on Saturday afternoon to become the 104th pole-sitter in the history of Formula 1, and it looks as though he is starting to get that Ferrari under his control.

The Prancing Horse, so far this season, has seemingly favoured Charles Leclerc and his driving style with Sainz admitting earlier in the campaign that he was still struggling to really get to grips with it but, after a fine drive in Canada where he could have won and now a first-ever pole lap, it looks as though he's becoming at one with his 2022 car.

He'll be desperate to turn that into a first-ever F1 win tomorrow, then, with him leading the field away from Max Verstappen and team-mate Leclerc, whilst the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez is in fourth.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, starts the Grand Prix in fifth but speaking to the press here at Silverstone after the session he revealed he felt he could have been even higher:

"In the rain we were fighting for the front row right up until the second to last lap but I was asked to back off and go for the last lap [as the final flying run] but then it rained and that's a bit unfortunate."

He'll be eager to show the Mercedes has good race pace tomorrow, though, with dry conditions expected.

Elsewhere in the top ten, Lando Norris put his McLaren in 6th place ahead of Fernando Alonso in the Alpine - who was at one point three seconds quicker than anyone in the ever-changing conditions - whilst George Russell qualified eighth - he admitted in the press pen he made a mistake on his final run at turn three.

Completing the top ten, meanwhile, Zhou Guanyu in the Alfa Romeo and Nicholas Latifi in the Williams, with the Canadian putting in a stellar performance and potentially very timely as question marks swirl over his future in the sport.

The British Grand Prix gets underway tomorrow at 3pm.
