Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor played out arguably the most memorable World Championship final in the history of snooker at the Crucible in Sheffield, with the final being dubbed the ‘Black Ball Final.’

The match was branded with that title because of the drama that ensued. After two days of battle, it all came down to one deciding frame to settle the biggest crown in the sport.

Inside the final frame there was pure drama, not only had the match come down to just one frame, it all came down to the black ball.

Davis missed a tough pot on the black, but one no one expected him to miss. Taylor walked back to his seat looking heartbroken and shocked, knowing he handed up a golden opportunity for his opponent to claim the title.

After overcutting the black, Davis left Taylor a slightly easier shot on the black, with the Northern Irishman making no mistakes to lift his maiden world crown. His celebration is synonymous with snooker fans, the cue above the head and then the finger wag, iconic!

On top of all that carnage, it was still a huge upset, Davis was the defending champion, beating Taylor 16-9 in the semi-final 12 months ago, holding a 9-1 record over his opponent too. He was a three-time world champion at the time and raced into an 8-0 lead in the final.

Taylor, the world number 11, clawed his way back into the match, levelling at 11-11, 15-15 and then 17-17 before finally getting ahead 18-17 to win. It was the first ranking final Davis lost in his career, it didn’t impact him too much, winning another three world crowns to cement his place as one of the greatest of all time.

In 2010 for the 25-year anniversary of the final, the pair played a frame at the Crucible to entertain the fans once again.

They were then trying to recreate the final shots, but Davis potted the black! He brought it back up and Taylor missed it, so Davis then missed the following shot.

After getting up off his shot, ‘boring’ Steve Davis, who was in top form throughout the match with his dry humour, bemoaned his shot and said: “And put it over the middle pocket which is where Dennis finally potted it.”

Taylor retorted: “So this one you couldn’t miss, you didn’t see this bit did you?”

The crowd loved it as the iconic duo put on a show for the Crucible crowd once again!
