Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is "really pushing" for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez to be signed this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils and their Premier League rivals Arsenal are currently battling it out for the player's signature, and the 24-year-old is a prime target following the agreement to sign free-agent Christian Eriksen on Monday.

What is the latest news involving Martinez?

Over the weekend, The Athletic reported that Arsenal are set to meet Ajax this week for more talks over a transfer for Martinez.

The same outlet claims the north London club and United have been negotiating with the Eredivisie champions for the Argentine, who is thought to be valued at around €50m (£43m).

According to The Athletic, both English sides believe Martinez is happy to join them, so it will be interesting to see what happens if Ajax end up accepting offers from both outfits.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke recently told GIVEMESPORT that Mikel Arteta will be desperate to quickly wrap up a deal to avoid a situation where Martinez can choose between the two Premier League giants.

What has Romano said about Martinez and United?

Romano says Ten Hag is pushing for his former player to be brought to Old Trafford as he looks to improve United's defence.

When asked by GMS who would Martinez prefer to join out of United and Arsenal, the transfer expert said: "At the moment, the man who is pushing is Erik ten Hag and so this could be a factor. The player has not decided yet, but he knows that Erik ten Hag can be a factor. The player knows that Erik is really pushing to have him at Manchester United."

How highly does Ten Hag rate Martinez?

Ten Hag is clearly a huge fan of Martinez, with the 24-year-old playing 120 times under the Dutchman following his arrival at Ajax from Defensa y Justicia back in 2019.

Speaking about Martinez a couple of years ago, Ten Hag told Voetbal International (via Manchester Evening News): "He has good technique, overview on the ball, dueling power."

The United boss also talked up his versatility, saying: "He can play left-back, left central defender and left controlling midfielder."

Considering all of the above, it is not hard to see why Ten Hag is eyeing a reunion with Martinez at Old Trafford, and he may feel that he has an advantage over Arsenal given that Ajax connection. Still, at this stage, you would not rule anything out, with the Gunners also very keen on the defender.
