Tottenham could still try and sign another centre-back after Clement Lenglet's arrival, believes transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Frenchman is closing in on a loan move to Hotspur Way, but Romano has not ruled out Antonio Conte recruiting an additional central defender if the right opportunity presents itself.

What is the latest transfer news involving Tottenham?

According to multiple reports, Lenglet is set to join Spurs on a temporary deal.

Last week, The Athletic stated that Tottenham were close to signing the 27-year-old on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Should Lenglet arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he would be the north London club's fifth summer addition.

The transfer window has not even been open for a whole month yet, but Spurs have already brought in Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster to improve the depth of Conte's squad.

What has Romano said about Tottenham's transfer plans?

Romano can still see Tottenham signing another centre-back after Lenglet if the right player becomes available.

Speaking about the possibility of Conte strengthening his central defence even further, the journalist said to GMS: "I think it depends on the opportunities. Lenglet, it's a loan deal, so it's a smart deal for Tottenham because they're not spending crazy money on the centre-back, on a player who has good experience. Conte wanted him, so he's a smart deal for Tottenham."

Who could Tottenham sign?

It is quite clear that Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni and RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol were above Lenglet on Conte's list of left-sided centre-halves.

In May, Football Insider reported that both players were two of Conte's top three targets to address the left side of his central defence.

With Bastoni's agent stating that his client is staying in Italy, though, and Leipzig refusing to sell Gvardiol, deals virtually became impossible.

There is a long way to go before the transfer window closes, however. Should one of the two suddenly become available, it certainly would not be a shock to see Tottenham revisit things.

Whatever happens, Conte can be pleased with the business Spurs have done this summer. With Richarlison, Perisic and Bissouma all arriving, that is the attack, midfield and even wing-back area strengthened, while the addition of Lenglet will be a boost to the central defence.

Tottenham will be competing in the Champions League again in the new season, while managers will be able to use five substitutions in the Premier League, so Conte's moves in the transfer market so far have been smart ones.

Is it enough to put them in contention for the title? Given the strength of Manchester City and Liverpool, probably not, but the business they have done should make them a much more competitive side.
