When Samuel Eto'o begged for Jay-Jay Okocha to be subbed during Joseph Yobo's testimonial

Jay-Jay Okocha

When thinking of the greatest African players in recent memory, Jay-Jay Okocha is a name that immediately springs to mind.

The Nigerian was an absolute magician during his football career.

Okocha could do things with a football that only a handful of players in football history could do.

He was a pure joy to watch. He played the game as if he was playing in his back garden as he pulled out outrageous trick after outrageous trick.

Okocha played for the likes of Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers before hanging up his boots in 2008.

In 2016, at the age of 42, Okocha dusted off his boots and took part in Joseph Yobo’s testimonial.

Many stars played that day, including Samuel Eto’o, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure and Nwankwo Kanu.

But it was Okocha, who had been retired for eight years, who stole the show.

The Nigerian midfielder was in fine form. In typical Okocha fashion, he produced a no-look pass with his first-touch just 20 seconds into the game.

Playing in the centre of midfield, he proceeded to toy with the opposition with some dazzling skills and passes.

He was so good, in fact, that Eto’o even begged for his opponent to be subbed just 23 minutes into the match.

His highlights from the match have been shared once again by Twitter user @AfricaFactsZone and they are a brilliant watch. View them below…

Okocha spent four years at Bolton. Alan Shearer recently named him as the 10th best African footballer to have ever played in the Premier League.

He said, per Manchester Evening News: “I think of him and I just think of someone who was happy. At Bolton, the players that they had there, that team was incredible.

“He was unbelievable. He didn’t score that many goals though.

“With someone of his ability you’d expect him I think to have got more but in terms of entertainment and all that.

“They did remarkably well to get him there really. PSG I think they got him from, on a free, so great business from Bolton. A very good player.”
