The British Grand Prix at Silverstone was dramatic to say the least, giving us probably the best race of the year so far. However, protests overshadowed the spectacle a little bit. After Zhou Guanyu’s horror crash on the opening lap, protestors made their way to the track and sat in the middle of it, risking their lives to get their point across.Just Stop Oil, who are a climate activist group were behind the protests, although the race hampered their message. They were dealt with swiftly, but the race was already red-flagged so they didn’t stop the race themselves like they planned to.Esteban Ocon’s cockpit camera showed him driving past the protesters who were being restrained by marshals and police officers.Thankfully, no marshal, officer, driver or protester was harmed in the chaos, with the protest barely hindering the race.

The FIA made comment on the matter, saying:  â€œWe also confirm that after the red flag, several people attempted to enter the track. These people were immediately removed and the matter is now being dealt with by the local authorities.”

Since then, a representative for the group appeared on Good Morning Britain, with Gary Lineker quick support them, tweeting: “If it’s not already too late, history will look back very favourably on these people.”

Martin Brundle, Sky Sports F1 pundit was far from impressed with the former England striker, replying with: “Gary please don’t encourage this reckless behaviour. They’d have been sliced into 100 pieces and fans, marshals and drivers were wholly at risk of injury and death. We already had one lucky escape. I totally 100% support freedom of speech and opinion, but do it responsibly.”

Lineker came back at Brundle, saying: “Way more risk of death with climate change than there is attempting to delay a motor race.”

Ironically, the hybrid engines in Formula One are actually the most fuel efficient in the world. The technology along with aerodynamics has also helped reduce co2 emissions with F1 having a carbon positive ambition too.

Just Stop Oil released their own statement which read: “A group of supporters of Just Stop Oil have stormed the track at British GP 2022. If you are more outraged about this disruption than our world being burnt before our eyes, then you need to get your priorities straight.”

Lewis Hamilton also spoke out against the protestors, with the following statement being put on his Instagram story:

We don’t know about you, but we didn’t expect to see Lineker vs Brundle on social media this morning, but here we are!
