Aston Villa’s next ‘priority’ in the transfer market is to sign a midfielder to go alongside Boubacar Kamara, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Midlands outfit have already made a handful of additions to Steven Gerrard’s first-team squad this summer but are expected to try and bring in further reinforcements ahead of next season.

What is the latest news involving Aston Villa?

Villa have already secured Philippe Coutinho on a permanent basis from Barcelona following a successful loan spell, Diego Carlos from Sevilla while Kamara arrived on a free transfer from Marseille.

Things have gone a little quiet in recent weeks, though, while striker Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings have previously been linked with moves away from Villa Park.

However, it now seems the duo, who are valued at a combined £49.5m by Transfermarkt, are set to remain put, with Steven Gerrard focussed on offloading the fringe stars in his ranks.

And further additions are also anticipated to arrive at the club over the coming months, with a central midfielder, centre-back and striker seemingly on Gerrard’s wish list.

What has Jones said about Aston Villa?

Jones told GiveMeSport: “The priority is to get a midfielder to go alongside Kamara. So that is the big fix, and then the luxury fix is a forward; they want an upgrade on Ings and Watkins.

“Who can they get? Who could that person be? What could they do? How exciting can that name be? All these different profiles of player are being explored.

“I presumed that Watkins, or more likely Ings would leave, but it’s not sounding so much like that anymore. And it might be that just somebody else comes in as well, which is really interesting that that's the approach that they're going to take here.”

Who could Aston Villa sign?

Back in May, Sky Sports revealed that Villa were one of several sides to have made enquiries about Rangers defender Calvin Bassey.

Gerrard signed the highly-rated 22-year-old for the Gers back in 2020, and after the Nigeria international enjoyed a stellar 2021/22 campaign, the pair could be reunited imminently.

Meanwhile, Football Insider have reported that Villa have ‘turned their attention’ to Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in order to solve their engine room issues.

And French outlet But! has claimed that Gerrard’s charges are among the sides eager to snap up LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David, who registered 19 goals in 47 appearances last season.
