Newcastle have 'massive intent' to make 'exciting' signing at St James' Park

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe clapping supporters

Newcastle United will have ‘massive intent’ in the summer transfer window as they look to bolster Eddie Howe’s first-team squad, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies became the richest football club in the world following their Saudi-backed takeover last year and have already secured some exciting signings since then.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle?

When Howe took over from former manager Steve Bruce back in November, Newcastle were 19th in the table and five points from safety after 11 games of the Premier League campaign.

However, the 44-year-old tactician quickly turned things around at St. James Park, in part thanks to a £90 million spending spree in January.

Five new faces arrived in the shape of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett, Chris Wood and Dan Burn, allowing Newcastle to finish in 11th place, 14 points clear of relegated Burnley.

The North East outfit have already secured the signatures of Targett on a permanent deal following his successful loan spell alongside Nick Pope and Sven Botman this summer with further additions expected to follow.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

Jones believes that the Toon Army will continue to be active in the market despite recently ending their pursuit of Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, saying: “Newcastle will have massive intent.

“Now they have Botman over the line, they can go to these players and be like, ‘right, this is how we’ve set off, you saw what we did last January, you saw Bruno Guimaraes and the impact he’s started to make, we’re now signing Nick Pope, we’ve got Botman, we’ve beaten AC Milan to sign him, we want you to come in to.

“’We’re going to be knocking on the door of Europe next season, and then the season after that we’re going to be in Europe.’ Whatever it is, whatever the product is that they’re selling, it becomes a lot more exciting.”

Who could Newcastle sign?

A recent report from Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws (via Sport Witness) claimed Newcastle have joined Ajax and Anderlecht in the race to sign Bayern Munich striker Joshua Zirkzee.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

The 21-year-old enjoyed an outstanding 2021/22 on loan with Anderlecht, registering 18 goals and 13 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

Snapping up Zirkzee could prove to be a sizeable coup for Howe and co. given his top-class potential, and may add the extra firepower to Newcastle’s forward line that’s needed to help them progress.
