Cristiano Ronaldo is actively seeking a move away from Manchester United this summer.

The Portuguese superstar returned to the club from Juventus last summer to great fanfare, but his dream homecoming ultimately turned into a bit of a nightmare.

From an individual perspective, Ronaldo enjoy a stellar 2021/22 campaign. He scored 24 goals across all competitions, including 18 in Premier League action.

But for the United team overall, it really was a season to forget.

They went trophyless once again and finished sixth in the table, which means they won't be playing Champions League football in 2022/23.

The fact Erik ten Hag's side will be in the Europa League instead is part of the reason why Ronaldo is eyeing up a summer transfer.

United's lack of productivity in the transfer market following a lacklustre campaign has also infuriated the 37-year-old, although the club are close to confirming deals for Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.

And another thing fuelling Ronaldo's desire to leave is the fact that he's recently had to take a substantial pay cut.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, his salary has been reduced by 25% from £480,000-a-week to £360,000-a-week - which is obviously still an enormous amount of money.

Sources close to Ronaldo claim the financial issue has "upset" the player.

So, why has it happened? Well, it is because of the team's failure to finish in the Premier League top four and subsequently qualify for the Champions League.

But despite the aforementioned issues surrounding Ronaldo's future, MEN state that dressing room sources remain confident that he will remain at Old Trafford for another year.

Those at United also believe that there's no obvious buyer for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

One club being linked with a move for Ronaldo is Chelsea, with The Sun reporting that new owner Todd Boehly wants to make him a 'marquee signing' this summer.

However, he will have to convince manager Thomas Tuchel that he's worth the outlay, which may be easier said than done.

The Ronaldo saga has just started and it looks like it will drag on for quite some time...
