Aston Villa are still on the hunt for a “big” addition in both centre midfield and attack, according to Dean Jones.

Steven Gerrard’s side have already made four senior additions so far during the transfer window, but are still searching for more players to add to the squad.

What’s the latest on Villa?

The West Midlands giants have suffered a blow in their hunt for a midfielder over recent weeks, with targets Yves Bissouma and Kalvin Phillips moving to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City respectively.

Young striker Rory Wilson has joined the club from Rangers, but he is unlikely to be involved in the first-team set-up straight away at the age of 16, despite scoring 49 goals for club and country at youth level last season.

This means that Villa are still looking for significant additions in both the middle of the park and forward line going into the 2022/23 Premier League season.

And Jones believes that they are still actively hunting for players to fit the bill at Villa Park, ahead of August’s Premier League kick-off.

What has Jones said about Villa?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think they’re still looking for a centre midfielder that can go into that team and start games.

“They’re still looking at a big addition in centre-midfield and they’re looking for a big addition in attack.

“It's just about finding the right type of player.”

What next for Villa?

BirminghamLive have stated that Steven Gerrard “really loves” Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher, who had an incredibly impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace last season.

The 22-year-old made 39 appearances for the Eagles last season, scoring eight goals and providing five assists according to Transfermarkt.

He would be an ideal body in midfield for Villa, and he has shown that he is also a competent dribbler of the ball, ranking in the top 8% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues and European competition last season for dribbles completed per 90 minutes (1.42), according to FBref.

And a SofaScore rating of 7.08 for the Chelsea man’s performances last season suggest that he would be an excellent pickup for Gerrard, with his showings over the last campaign proving that he can play at Premier League level to a good standard on a consistent basis.

News regarding attacking options has been thin on the ground for Villa fans, though the club are known for doing their business quietly, so don’t rule out a surprise announcement in the near future.
