Newcastle United still want to sign Moussa Diaby this summer but also have Noni Madueke on their shortlist, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies are believed to be in the market for attacking reinforcements following their failed pursuit of Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike and could now turn their attention to Diaby and Madueke.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle?

Eddie Howe has already managed to bring in Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett on permanent deals in the current window, adding significant strength to his defensive options.

However, it seems as though improving the quality on offer in the final third of the pitch is now the priority, with 90min claiming Diaby is at the top of their wish list.

It’s believed that the North East outfit are prepared to break their transfer record in order to bring the 22-year-old to the club from Bayer Leverkusen.

The German outfit have reportedly placed a £40 million price tag on their prized asset, while PSV Eindhoven’s Madueke is also said to be one of the attacking options being considered.

90min have reported that the England Under-21 international is being tracked by a number of Premier League clubs, with Newcastle listed as one of the interested parties.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

Jones has informed that Diaby is ‘100%’ the priority for Newcastle but a deal for Madueke is also being ‘worked upon’ at this moment in time.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Moussa Diaby 100% is still the guy that they want in that role, but Madueke, he's on the list.

“I checked with someone is this a rumour we should take seriously, and they said, ‘yeah, he's on the list at the moment. It's not particularly far along, but it's being worked upon.’ So, that in itself is something I guess that Newcastle fans should be excited about.”

Would Diaby and Madueke be good signings?

Diaby, who is valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, enjoyed a stellar 2021/22 season, registering 17 goals and 14 assists in 42 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions.

Comfortable on either flank, the France international helped fire his side to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga, and he would be a real coup for Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Madueke racked up 15 goal contributions in 34 outings for PSV despite missing a large chunk of the season through injury.

The 20-year-old helped the Eredivisie giants lift the Dutch Cup, and although he’s valued at a relatively modest £16.2m, he could also prove to be an expensive acquisition with three years remaining on his contract.
