Winning the FIFA World Cup is the dream of every footballer, the biggest tournament in international football where the best countries in the world collide every four years.

The tournament has transformed the careers of unknown footballers, catalysing life-changing transfers due to their performances, and cemented legendary status for those already at the top of the game.

Some of the names to captivate the World Cup have included the likes of Ronaldo, Gerd Muller, Pele, Gabriel Batistuta and more. 

However, Germany's Miroslav Klose tops the charts for most World Cup goals.

Klose scored goals across four World Cups, where he would average 0.67 goals per game, with the German scoring 16 goals in 24 games.

His international career began in March of 2001 and he went on to score 71 goals in 137 games for Die Mannschaft.

2002 World Cup

Klose's first international competition was the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where the then-Kaiserslautern striker went head-to-head with one of the world's best in Brazil forward Ronaldo. 

Germany and Brazil both had great World Cup campaigns in 2002, which came to a conclusion when both teams met in the final.

Leading up to this, Klose had scored important goals in the group stages, with the German forward having a fantastic individual game when Germany defeated Saudi Arabia 8-0.

The final saw Germany lose to Brazil, with Ronaldo scoring a brace to secure the trophy. 

2006 World Cup

By 2006 Klose had moved to Werder Bremen, where he'd had an incredibly prolific season, scoring 25 goals in 26 games and even assisting 13

His fine form continued into the FIFA World Cup. Klose finished the top scorer of the competition with 5 goals in the finals as Germany reached the semi-finals of the competition in their home country.

One of his most important goals came in the quarter-finals when he scored an all-important header to equalise in Germany's comeback that saw them knock out Argentina on penalties. 

Klose would beat the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Fernando Torres to the golden boot.

2010 World Cup

The 09/10 season would see Klose struggle, with the forward scoring 4 goals in 25 games. However, his World Cup performances weren't slowing down.

Klose finished the FIFA World Cup with 4 goals, just missing out on consecutive golden boots to team-mate Thomas Muller by 1 goal.

Klose's most important goal in the tournament came in Germany's 4-1 victory over England in the Round of 16. The centre-forward opened the scoring, marking his 50th goal for Germany in only 99 international games.

Germany would finish third place in this tournament after defeating Uruguay 3-2.

2014 World Cup

The 2014 FIFA World Cup saw 36-year-old Klose play in his final tournament Germany and was his last chance to set the record for most World Cup goals. Prior to the tournament, Klose was one goal from equaling Ronaldo's record of 15. 

Germany's campaign saw them put into a group alongside Portugal, Ghana and USA.

And in the 71st minute of matchday 2, Klose matched the record for most World Cup goals after a well-timed tap-in at the back post from a corner. 

Germany would advance through the group, finishing top. 

Klose's record-breaking goal came in the semi-finals when Germany humiliated hosts Brazil 7-1. Klose scored the second goal in the 23rd minute of the game after a slick move led to him turning in a rebound to make history.

Klose would have his record feat topped off by Germany being crowned the 2014 FIFA World Cup Winners after a goal from Mario Gotze in extra time against Argentina.

During an illustrious career, Klose scored 258 club goals in 668 games and cemented himself as one of the best players to play in the World Cup.
