Man Utd will get 'final answer' on £43m star 'this week' at Old Trafford

Man United boss Erik ten Hag

Manchester United could get an answer this week on what club Ajax and Argentina centre-back Lisandro Martínez is going to join, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 24-year-old has been linked with both clubs throughout the summer.

What’s the latest on Martínez?

In a tweet put out by Romano this week, he has stated that Erik ten Hag wants United to move quickly on a deal for Martínez, with the new Dutch manager wanting his former centre-back to make the move to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the same tweet also states that Arsenal are still working on a deal for the seven-time Argentina international, suggesting that Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his backline this summer.

Martínez, who has been valued at £43m by Ajax, has been pushing to leave the Amsterdam club, and he has been very clear about this.

And Romano says that the 5 foot 9 centre-back wants to leave the Dutch giants to pursue a Premier League experience this season.

What has Romano said about Martínez?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He feels that is the right time for him to leave Ajax and to try a big experience in the Premier League.”

“So, the player is really pushing and I think this week we will have the final answers on this Lisandro story.”

Would Martínez be a good signing?

Martínez, who has been dubbed “The Argentine Butcher” following his performances at Ajax, could prove to be an excellent signing for both Arsenal or United, with both sides’ Achilles heel being their inability to keep the ball out of the back of their own net last season.

The centre-back had been a regular for ten Hag at Ajax last season, playing in 37 games, scoring one goal and providing four assists in that time, according to Transfermarkt.

Martínez is an excellent tackler of the ball and ranks in the top 1% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues and European competition for tackles per 90 minutes (3.13) according to FBref, suggesting he will have the ability to adapt to Premier League football, should he sign for either club.

The £28.8m-rated man is also an extremely competent passer of the ball, ranking in the top 1% of centre-backs for passes attempted per 90 minutes (87) and progressive passes per 90 (7.88) according to the same stats provider, which shows that he would be an ideal fit for both Arteta and ten Hag, who are both in need of a centre-back who is comfortable on the ball.

Despite having not played in the Premier League in his career as of yet, the stats and performances seem to suggest that Martínez would likely be an improvement on what both Arsenal and Manchester United already have, and he could prove to be an excellent signing.
