Chelsea: £27m superstar would be 'big signing for fans' at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly in the stands

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will ‘raise the profile’ of the club and seal ‘a big signing for Blues fans’ if he succeeds in tempting Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

A consortium led by Boehly gained the keys to the west London giants when a £4.25billion takeover was completed in May and he has wasted no time in looking to attract a marquee signing.

What’s the latest news involving Ronaldo?

After it had already been revealed that Boehly had held conversations with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, with Chelsea hoping to discover whether a move to Stamford Bridge could be a possibility, a huge twist came last weekend.

That is because it emerged that Ronaldo has told Manchester United that he wants to be allowed to leave Old Trafford if a satisfactory offer is tabled before the September 1 transfer deadline.

It is understood that Chelsea are now considering a move for the Portuguese despite his current employers’ insistence that Ronaldo is not for sale.

He is seeking a move away from Manchester United due to wanting to compete in the Champions League, which the Red Devils will not be involved in after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.

Ronaldo would reportedly be open to sealing a switch to Chelsea, although the Blues have yet to make a final decision on whether to head to Manchester United with a formal offer.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Ronaldo?

O’Rourke has doubts as to whether Ronaldo would suit Chelsea’s style of play under head coach Thomas Tuchel.

However, the journalist feels the £27million-rated star’s arrival would excite the fanbase and get Boehly’s reign off to a flying start.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “Whether he fits into Thomas Tuchel’s plans and how he sees his team playing next season, that’s maybe up for debate.

“But I think if Todd Boehly signs somebody like Ronaldo, it definitely raises the profile of the whole club.

“He would be a big signing for Chelsea fans as well, which would help the new ownership get off to a good start.”

Are Chelsea facing competition for Ronaldo’s signature?

With Ronaldo being a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, the vast majority of clubs would love to have a player of his calibre.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Italian giants Napoli have been mooted as potential destinations for the 37-year-old.

However, Chelsea’s stiffest competition may actually come from Ronaldo’s current employers as Manchester United will be desperate to keep hold of the 189-cap Portugal international, particularly after a season in which he scored 24 goals for them.
