Manchester United’s failure to land the signature of Darwin Núñez was “a big blow”, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 11-cap Uruguay international signed for Liverpool for a club-record £85m fee in June.

What’s the latest on Manchester United?

United have only made one senior signing so far this summer, with the arrival of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord for £14.7m this month.

Erik ten Hag is yet to make any additional signings to the Red Devils side that finished sixth in the Premier League last season, earning themselves a spot in the UEFA Europa League group-stages this campaign.

United had shown an interest in the signature of Núñez this summer, but lost out on the 23-year-old’s signature to their biggest rivals on the red side of Merseyside.

And Romano believes that it was a big blow for ten Hag’s side to lose out on Núñez’s signature this summer.

What has Romano said about Núñez?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It's not easy to find solutions, they [Man United] wanted Darwin Núñez, but Liverpool signed him in a very fast way.

“And so, for Manchester United this was a big blow because they wanted Darwin Núñez.”

What next for Manchester United?

There will be frustration amongst United supporters, that ten Hag hasn’t been able to bring in many of his own signings as of yet this season, with the club’s fans wanting to see the new manager given the chance to rebuild an ageing and underperforming side.

Denmark international Christian Eriksen is an imminent arrival at the club, having made a stunning return to football, following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, when he signed for Brentford at the end of the January transfer window this year.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder will sign as a free-agent for ten Hag’s side this summer, with United having beaten off competition from former employers Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford.

Lisandro Martínez is another player in which United are interested in purchasing, with the Ajax and Argentina centre-back deciding between the Red Devils and Arsenal, after having confirmed to the Dutch giants that he would like leave for a Premier League experience this summer.

Worryingly for ten Hag, Cristiano Ronaldo has made it clear he would like to leave Old Trafford this summer, less than a year after rejoining his former side, as he wants the club to show more ambition heading forward, whilst the club has already lost the services of Paul Pogba following the expiry of his contract this summer.

Whilst missing out on Núñez was a major disappointment for ten Hag and the club, Manchester United will need to start making solid additions soon, otherwise they could potentially see a repeat of last season’s very disappointing campaign.
