Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is seeking a new left-back who fits 'a very specific profile' amid Villa Park interest in Sergio Gomez, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Midlands giants have been busy during the summer transfer window - with Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos and Robin Olsen penning terms - but Gomez could become a fifth close season addition.

What's the latest news involving Gomez?

According to The Athletic, Gomez has worked his way onto Villa's radar and they have been monitoring his development at Anderlecht.

The report suggests the 21-year-old is being viewed as a cheaper alternative to other targets pinpointed by Gerrard, who is preparing for his first full season at the helm after taking charge last November.

Gerrard is seeking an understudy to first-choice left-back Lucas Digne, who made the £25million move from Everton in January.

It comes after Matt Targett made his loan switch to Newcastle United permanent when a £15million deal was struck last month.

Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that Gomez has caught the attention of numerous clubs thanks to his impressive performances for Belgian giants Anderlecht.

What has Dean Jones said about Gomez?

Jones believes Villa have turned their attentions towards Gomez after struggling to identify a left-back who will be willing to play second fiddle to Digne.

The transfer insider feels Gerrard is determined to bolster his options in the position and has a clear vision of the qualities he wants any fresh faces to have.

When asked whether Gomez could be the solution while the Midlands club are finding it difficult to sign an understudy to Digne, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "I don't know too much about him personally, but it does seem to be the situation with Villa.

"They are looking for someone of a very specific profile and somebody who is going to be content with a specific role within the squad.

"There aren't that many players, at the level they are looking, that are going to be content with that."

Could Gomez be an exciting addition?

Gomez may be in the early stages of his career, but he has already shown that he has plenty of potential after previously being on the books of Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

Despite featuring predominantly in a defensive role last season, he managed to chalk up 22 goal contributions in 49 outings.

That shows Gomez is not afraid to get forward and it is further emphasised by the fact he has found the back of the net six times and registered as many assists in nine Spain under-21 appearances.

The £9million-rated Anderlecht ace boasted an average match rating of 7.1 during the 2021/22 campaign, so he could prove to be a shrewd signing for Villa.
