Rangers will ‘be looking’ into the possibility of signing Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from Pittodrie in recent weeks following another impressive campaign in Scottish football and could make the move to Glasgow.

What is the latest news involving Ferguson?

Ferguson’s uncle Barry made over 250 appearances for Rangers and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the Old Firm clubs.

And the former Alloa Athletic manager has claimed his nephew is ready to take the ‘next step’ in his promising career and move away from Aberdeen.

“I do believe he is at the stage in his career where he needs to go and make that next step, whether that is at a Rangers, a Celtic, down south or in Italy,” Ferguson said on The Go Radio Football Show.

The Scottish Sun recently revealed that Serie A new boys Lecce are eager to snap up the Scotland international in a £2 million deal, but they are not the only interested party.

Sky Sports reported last month that Millwall have had a £1.5m offer rejected by the Dons after it fell well below their valuation, meaning the race for Ferguson’s signature remains wide open.

What has O’Rourke said about Ferguson?

O’Rourke doesn’t believe any sentimental feeling will come into the minds of Rangers’ hierarchy when assessing Ferguson and reckons he is someone who could be on their radar.

He told GiveMeSport: “I don't think anything else comes into it, you have to look at the player on merit, and I'm sure that's what Rangers would do if they were to make a move for Lewis Ferguson.

“He's been a good player for Aberdeen, has been linked with quite a few moves abroad, so I'm sure Rangers would be looking at Ferguson as a potential signing, and they would know all about him.”

Would Ferguson be a good signing?

Former Hamilton owner Ronnie MacDonald previously described Lewis as a “diamond” and it’s difficult to argue with that assessment.

The box-to-box dynamo has registered 37 goals and 23 assists in 168 appearances for Aberdeen and continued to showcase his top-class potential in a struggling side last term.

As per WhoScored, he won three aerial duels while also averaging 3.8 shots and 1.4 interceptions per league game, placing him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates.

Whether Rangers act upon their ex-star’s advice remains to be seen, but Ferguson could be a valuable addition to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s ranks.
