God, last season was hectic, wasn't it?

Last day drama at all ends of the table. Fluctuations in form from everyone but the two juggernauts that are Manchester City and Liverpool. Torrid seasons for Manchester United and Everton.

It's fair to say no set of fans got a very easy ride of it. Or maybe they did in an entertainment sense, however when it comes to stress, well, that's an entirely different matter.

The study

The folks over at ThePuntersPage decided to conduct a rather interesting and unique study on the matter of 'stress' throughout last season.

Between the dates of August 13-2021 and May 23-2022, they monitored every reply to the 20 Premier League teams' official Twitter accounts and sorted them into either a 'positive' or a 'negative' category.

From there, they then worked out what percentage of positive/negative tweets each club received and ranked them based on the results.

The findings? Well, they're rather telling...

It turns out Man United supporters were more frustrated with their club than any other fan base.

The conclusion

20. Manchester United | Negative tweets - 34.04%
19. Everton | Negative tweets - 31.03%
18. Tottenham | Negative tweets - 26%
17. West Ham | Negative tweets - 25.49%
16. Burnley | Negative tweets - 24.96%

It's a hardly a surprise to see the bottom two clubs in the positions they are after the diabolical seasons they endured.

The result means that of all the responses to the official Man Utd Twitter account last season, more than one in every three were negative in some way towards the club - I mean, you can't really blame them given the shambles they were forced to witness...

It's certainly a surprise to see Tottenham and West Ham so far down, though. Spurs did experience an especially unpredictable campaign, however ultimately achieved their goal of top four.

With regards to West Ham, to be honest, we have no idea what they had to complain about - it was a great season from David Moyes and his boys.

15. Arsenal | Negative tweets - 23.67%
14. Leeds | Negative tweets - 23.42%
13. Watford | Negative tweets - 23.16%
12. Chelsea | Negative tweets - 22.49%
11. Manchester City | Negative tweets - 22.54%

The season was typically dramatic for fans of the Gunners and, given many of them can be a pessimistic bunch at the best of times when it comes to their club, we aren't too surprised to see them in 15th place.

Man City in 11th? The club lost three league games all season!

10. Norwich | Negative tweets - 21.83%
9. Leicester | Negative tweets - 20.8%
8. Newcastle | Negative tweets - 20.59%
7. Wolves | Negative tweets - 20.03%
6. Liverpool | Negative tweets - 18.6%

Fair play to Norwich supporters, they had a tough ride throughout much of last season so to make it into the top half for fan optimism is pretty impressive.

Newcastle slot into eighth place - we imagine near enough all of their negative feedback either came before Christmas or was directed towards their new owners, because they were simply scintillating on the pitch after Eddie Howe came in.

And eventual runners-up Liverpool place sixth overall, which, given how good a ride they had on route to chasing a quadruple, we'd argue is a low score.

5. Brighton | Negative tweets - 17%
4. Southampton | Negative tweets - 16.8%
3. Crystal Palace | Negative tweets - 16.52%
2. Brentford | Negative tweets - 15.24%
1. Aston Villa | Negative tweets - 13.66%

The supporters in the West Midlands must have taken to Steven Gerrard given only around one in every 10 tweets towards the club were negative.

Brentford, Palace and Brighton all enjoyed exceptional campaigns. Whereas the inclusion of Southampton in fourth seems to be an outlier - maybe they're just a happy bunch.
