Rangers target Ellis Simms would ‘definitely add something’ to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s attack, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from Everton in recent weeks after enjoying a successful loan spell in Scottish football with Hearts last season.

Simms is reportedly a striker in demand at this moment in time, with The Express claiming that Rangers, Middlesbrough and a host of other Championship clubs are monitoring his situation.

Everton manager Frank Lampard is set to assess the 6 foot ace throughout pre-season before making a decision over his future, though, meaning his potential suitors may have to remain patient.

It’s believed that Rangers ‘could launch a bid to sign Simms on a permanent basis’ after catching the eye during his six-month stint in Edinburgh in the second half of 2021/22.

The Gers have already completed the signing of Antonio Colak from Greek outfit PAOK Salonika for £1.8 million plus add-ons, but further reinforcements in the final third of the pitch may be required.

Star forward Alfredo Morelos only has 12 months remaining on his current contract, and Simms could be viewed as the ideal candidate to succeed the prolific Colombian.

O’Rourke believes bringing in players who already know the league well could prove to be beneficial for Rangers in what is set to be another ‘keenly fought title race’ next term.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think for Rangers, if they can get players who can go and hit the ground running, that might give them an advantage in the title race because it's going to be a keenly fought title race again between Celtic and Rangers.

“So, I think Ellis Simms definitely proved last year that he can handle Scottish football and could be somebody that will definitely add something to that Rangers attack.”

Would Simms be a good signing?

Simms, who has been dubbed a "natural goalscorer," enjoyed a productive six-month loan spell with Blackpool in the second half of 2020/21, registering 10 goals and two assists in 24 appearances, firing them to promotion from League One.

And the England Under-21 international was equally as impressive for Hearts last time out, finding the back of the net on seven occasions in 21 outings, setting up one further strike.

Under the tutelage of Van Bronckhorst, Simms is a player who is only likely to improve, and his arrival at Ibrox could help Rangers wrestle the Scottish Premiership crown back off Celtic.
