Newcastle United are working on signing another midfielder this summer, on top of a wide-forward and a centre-forward, according to Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe’s side have made three signings so far this summer, but are looking to bring in at least three more according to Jones.

What’s the latest on Newcastle?

Sven Botman, Nick Pope, and Matt Targett have all arrived at St James’ Park this season, and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) owned club aren’t planning on stopping there this summer.

That is on top of the four January arrivals in the winter transfer window last season, with the club looking to make a genuine push for at least a top-half Premier League finish this season.

Last year’s October takeover of Newcastle by PIF has made the northern club the richest in the Premier League, and the club will be looking to make a splash in the transfer market before August’s Premier League kick-off.

And Jones believes that the Toon are looking at three key positions before September’s summer transfer deadline.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it's worth pointing out that Newcastle do still want another midfielder.

“So, at the moment when it seems like things are quiet around Newcastle, it's not.

“They're working on a wide forward, a centre-forward and a midfielder.

There's three big positions and three big signings still to come.”

Who could Newcastle sign?

Rumours on the midfield front are quite dry regarding Newcastle, though free-agent Jesse Lingard has been linked with a move to St. James’ Park, with the Express reporting that the Magpies are hoping to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s potential deal with the former Manchester United man.

You would imagine the club are working behind the scenes to identify the right player to potentially join Joelinton and Bruno Guimarães in the middle of the park at St. James’ Park.

The club have been linked with multiple wide-forwards over the past week, with Everton’s 21-year-old winger in Anthony Gordon having been linked with a move to Tyneside for a deal worth £35m, though the Merseyside club have issued a hands-off warning to Howe’s side.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby has also been linked with a transfer to St. James’ Park, though it is suggested that there is a gap between the two clubs' valuation of the player.

Meanwhile, the Magpies’ deal for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike seems to have reached an impasse, with Ligue 1 side’s head coach claiming that the 20-year-old now wants to stay at the French club.

It seems that even though Newcastle have only made three signings this summer, fans of the Tyneside club should expect more exciting additions through the door before the transfer window deadline.
