Frightening footage of the state of Boca Juniors' famous La Bombonera stadium has gone viral, with one of the stands appearing so unsafe that some fans have called for the ground to be shut down until repairs can be carried out.

With 72 league titles to their credit, Boca are one of the most decorated sides in South American football history.

Tens of thousands of supporters routinely flock to matches at their home base, officially known as Alberto Jose Armando Stadium. However, after watching the recent viral clip, there's at least one area of the ground that we'd definitely avoid.

In scenes captured on Wednesday at the Copa Libertadores encounter between Boca and Corinthians, a massive crack is visible in the top tier of one of the stands housing home fans.

As supporters bounce up and down on the shaky foundations beneath them, the crack seems to get larger still, with pieces of the ground actually falling away.

The stadium was last renovated in 1996, but is clearly in need of substantial work today.

Reacting to footage of the dilapidated stand on Twitter, fans were understandably appalled.

"A catastrophe waiting to happen," declared one response, while a second blasted Boca for not keeping up with repairs on the stadium, writing: "The structure is quite clearly not maintained."

Others simply couldn't believe that fans were still comfortable leaping up and down on such unstable ground.

Quiz: Can you guess the player from their Wikipedia career path?

"Yeah, f*** that. I’d be taking the nearest exit. I often wonder how strong the concrete and reinforced steel is at stadiums, I don’t think they were made for fans to simultaneously jump together".

"Why would you still stand there?" asked another in disbelief.

"Can't believe this is real, needs shutting ASAP," insisted a fifth fan, backed up by a further response that read: "One of the richest clubs in Argentina and that’s the state of the stands. No regard for fan safety".

One supporter who had visited the ground previously went on to explain why Boca fans are so keen to bounce so vigorously on top of the stand.

"I've been on the stadium tour. The guide said the away team changing room was under this stand, so that the Boca fans jumping up and down would intimidate them...(or kill them, by the looks of it). Funnily enough, she never mentioned the stadium being a death trap," they wrote.

Despite their fans' enthusiastic support, Boca went on to lose the tie 6-5 on penalties. The club later sacked manager Sebastian Battaglia - in a petrol station of all places!

Boca clearly face a number of challenges right now, but sorting their crumbling stadium surely needs to be a priority. Truly scary stuff!
