Six years have now passed since the Euro 2016 final. Time flies, doesn’t it?France and Portugal went head-to-head at the Stade de France in Paris and the tournament hosts were the overwhelming favourites to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy.Portugal defeated Croatia, Poland and Wales en route to the final. The general feeling was that France, who recorded an impressive 2-0 win over Germany in the semis, would be too strong - especially with their home supporters behind them. And when Portugal’s talismanic captain Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off with an injury in the 25th minute, a France victory felt even more inevitable. However, the deadlock remained unbroken after 90 minutes, which meant extra-time. The occasion appeared to be getting to the French players.Unable to make an impact on the pitch, Ronaldo famously spent most of the second half and extra-time barking out instructions next to manager, Fernando Santos.Whether or not Ronaldo’s touchline contribution made a difference, Portugal were crowned European champions thanks to a 109th-minute goal from striker, Eder, who was on loan at Lille from Swansea City.

Aston Villa fan won £1m thanks to £5 bet on Euro 2016 final

Eder’s winning goal ended up netting one Aston Villa fan a cool £1 million thanks to a sensational last-minute £5 bet.

Kitchen fitter Daman Chick, 32 at the time, won the life-changing sum of money after placing a bet as he was boarding a flight to Greece with his wife and two children.

Daman, who admitted he “rushed” the prediction, bet Eder would score the winning goal in the 84th minute.

Eder wasn’t brought off the subs’ bench against Croatia, Poland or Wales, so the chances of him scoring the winning in the final were minimal.

Indeed, ITV claim Eder was 14,322-1 to score in the 109th minute prior to kick-off.

But the striker was sent on in the 79th minute for midfielder Renato Sanches and went on to score the biggest goal of his life.

While Daman didn’t get the exact minute correct, he still won BetVictor’s Million Pound Goal competition after submitting the closest prediction.

"I'll be honest – I forgot the game was on"

Incredibly, though, the man himself didn’t realise he’d become a millionaire until days later.

After nobody claimed the prize, a worldwide #MissingMillionaire campaign was launched on social media and in newspapers.

"When I received the call, I sobered up instantly," Daman told the Express & Star after being identified. "I thought I'd just had one too many by the pool.

"I'll be honest – I forgot the game was on.

"I saw the score the next morning and thought nothing of it – I'd missed a pretty average game.

"My winning bet happened to be the one I placed last minute as I was boarding the plane to Zante."

Asked how he planned to spend the money, he added: "I definitely want to sort my parents out first.

"They've worked hard enough to support me over the years so I want to give them something back.

"My wife and I have siblings who we want to help out, as well and other family members.

"The wife knows I like to have a bit of a gamble. She wasn't too happy previously but I think she's good now.

"We'll celebrate with a few bottles of champagne and then a nice holiday with family and friends."
