The Canadian Premier League has just produced a moment so bewildering that we need your help trying to explain it. Like, seriously. When Valour FC secured a 1-0 win over HFX Wanderers FC on Sunday, the fans in attendance probably weren't expecting a moment from the game to gather worldwide attention. However, what happened during the first-half at the IG Field can only be described as the worst miss in football history, if indeed we can actually call it a 'miss'. Allow us to explain.

Crazy scenes in Canadian Premier League

With the scores locked at 0-0 in the early exchanges in Winnipeg, the home side were presented with what appeared to be the perfect opportunity to open the scoring.

In the 18th minute, the hosts were able to break the Wanderers back-line and fire the ball into the penalty area from the left-hand flank towards the run of Alessandro Riggi.

And despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Christian Oxner, the Canadian forward managed to get a shot away that squirmed underneath the shot-stopper and slowly towards the goal line.

The momentum of Riggi's run meant that he was helplessly thrown into the goal net, meaning that there was a heart-stopping few seconds where everyone wondered: will it go in or not?

Oxner looked to have the faintest of chances to claw the ball back from the precipice, but that was seemingly extinguished the moment that Riggi's teammate, William Akio, arrived on the scene.

Surely Akio would either safeguard the ball until it crossed the line or simply tap it into the net himself. Either way, the result would have been Valour taking the lead early doors.

The worst miss in football history

Only, in truly mind-blowing scenes - and trust us, we're not overselling this - the South Sudan international smashed the ball off the goal line before it crossed and away from danger for a throw-in.

We have absolutely no idea whether or not he thought the whistle had been blown or that he was trying to score and inexplicably failed to do so, but either way, it surely technically counts as a 'miss', right?

Well, that's the theory we're going with it because the crazy scenes in Canada stand out in our minds as one of the most bewildering phases of play we've ever seen in football. Check it out:

Anyone have an explanation? Anyone, please?

Bewildering scenes

Now, ultimately, there's just one man and one man only who knows what was actually going on there and that is, of course, Akio himself.

We can only hope for his sake that it was some sort of premature celebration or misguided belief that the game had stopped because otherwise it really is the most spectacular close-range miss you're ever likely to see.

Either way, though, with everything pointing towards the goal having stood had it indeed dribbled over the line, Akio's inexplicable actions must go down as one of the worst misses in football history.

After all, we're not sure we've ever seen a player from the attacking team fail to score when 75% of the ball, if not more, had already crossed the line.

The only saving grace is that it didn't actually cost Valour the game as they finally broke through in the 84th minute courtesy of a Moses Dyer strike that avoided the same fate as Riggi's goal-bound effort.

Football can't half be a strange sport sometimes...
