West Ham United manager David Moyes ‘definitely wants a big-name midfielder’ this summer, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The Hammers have made a solid start to their business in the transfer window, but several further additions are expected to arrive ahead of next season.

What is the latest news involving West Ham?

After West Ham made Nayef Aguerd their first signing of the summer last month, completing a £28 million deal from Rennes, the Evening Standard claimed he would be the first of many.

It was stated that Moyes had plans to make six further acquisitions, and he has already made progress towards achieving that figure.

Alphonse Areola has arrived on a permanent deal from Paris Saint-Germain following a successful loan spell last season, while central midfielder Flynn Downes has joined from Swansea City.

And Downes is unlikely to be the last engine room operator to add to West Ham’s options in the middle of the park following Mark Noble’s retirement and Alex Kral’s return to Spartak Moscow.

Current first-choice pairing Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek have also been linked with moves away from the London Stadium, meaning addressing that area of the pitch is likely to be high up on Moyes’ to-do list.

What has Brown said about West Ham?

West Ham made a bold attempt to prize Kalvin Phillips away from Leeds United in January before the England international moved to Manchester City.

And Brown believes Moyes is eager to add a similar star to his midfield options once again and is targeting a player ‘who knows the Premier League.’

He told GiveMeSport: “So, nobody quite knows the real situation there, but Moyes definitely wants a big-name midfielder who knows the Premier League. He’s been in for, going back to the last window, they wanted Phillips, which was highly ambitious.”

Who could West Ham sign?

According to The Mirror, West Ham are interested in snapping up James Ward-Prowse from Southampton after he registered 11 goals and eight assists in 42 appearances last season.

However, with four years remaining on the contract he signed as recently as last August, the 27-year-old is likely to set any potential suitor back a significant sum.

Reports have even suggested that any potential suitor could have to splash out up to £75m to secure his signature, a figure that would comfortably make Ward-Prowse West Ham’s record signing.

It remains to be seen who Moyes attempts to bring to east London but bolstering his options in central midfielder certainly appears to be on his list of priorities.
