Newcastle United's priority is still Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

The German outfit are believed to want a massive fee for the Frenchman if they do decide to let him go this summer, but Jones does not think that will necessarily put the Magpies off.

What is the latest news involving Diaby?

Last month, The Sun reported that Newcastle would have to make an offer of £50m if they are to have any chance of signing Diaby this transfer window.

According to the same outlet, Leverkusen are insisting that the 23-year-old is not for sale but are prepared to consider a bid of £50m.

While it is thought that Eddie Howe is keen on him, The Sun claims Diaby's name was first suggested by new sporting director Dan Ashworth.

It has been a productive window for Newcastle so far, who have already signed Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett on a permanent deal.

What has Jones said about Diaby and Newcastle?

Jones does not see Newcastle giving up on Diaby anytime soon.

Speaking about their interest in the France international, the journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "Diaby is the priority and they're sticking to that. I still think that this might be a transfer whereby they end up slightly overpaying if that's what it takes to get him."

Why is Diaby Newcastle's priority?

Diaby was fantastic for Leverkusen last season. In 32 Bundesliga appearances, he scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists.

The fact that Diaby can play on both flanks is also likely to appeal to Newcastle. According to Transfermarkt, he played on the left wing 14 times and on the right wing 23 times during the 2021/22 campaign.

In total, the former Paris Saint-Germain man made 42 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen. Considering that and the above, you can see why Die Werkself are reluctant to let him go.

At the same time, you can also see why Newcastle want Diaby so badly. Based on how he performed last term, he would be an upgrade on all of Howe's current attacking options at St James' Park.

Does that mean the Tyneside club should go out and spend £50m on Diaby? Not necessarily. But given that he can improve the team and Newcastle do have the money following PIF's takeover last year, you could not blame them for deciding to.
