What’s the latest on Matondo?

Matondo spent the 2021/22 season on loan in Belgium playing for Cercle Brugge, with his Schalke career seemingly stalling having not made an appearance for the German side since the end of 2020.

The Daily Mail have now reported that the £3.6m-rated winger is closing in on a move to Rangers, having joined Schalke in 2019 for a fee close to £11m.

Matondo has also been left out of Schalke’s summer training camp, suggesting that the winger is extremely close to a potential move to Ibrox.

And according to Jones, the 11-time Wales international is becoming quite keen on a move to the Scottish Premiership club.

What has Jones said about Matondo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Matondo is a really interesting one.

“He's a player that raises the quality of the side and also has plenty to prove.

“I think that signing players with ambition and drive is key.

“I was speaking to someone yesterday and it’s thought that Rangers is seen as the perfect platform for him right now.

“As talks progress, I think he's becoming quite keen on the idea of going there.”

Would Matondo be a good signing for Rangers?

The signing of a player of Matondo’s calibre would likely prove to be an excellent addition for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side this summer, with the Scottish side looking to wrestle back the Premiership title back off Celtic this season.

The 21-year-old made 27 appearances for Cercle Brugge last season, scoring ten goals and providing two assists according to Transfermarkt, showing that the wide man also has an eye for goal.

Last season was also Matondo’s most productive spell of playing time in his career as of now, having played 2,024 minutes over the course of the last season according to FBref, suggesting that he would now be ready for a full campaign of Premiership football.

And an average SofaScore rating of 6.84 for his performances in Belgium last season suggest that when called upon, the Liverpool-born player is capable of putting in consistently solid performances for his side.

Overall, Matondo would likely be an excellent addition for Rangers, with a move to Ibrox potentially being the tonic needed to kick-start his career.
