Rockstar admits that Grand Theft Auto 6 must “exceed expectations” when it finally releases.
The developer has confirmed that the next instalment in the franchise is currently in development, but a release date has yet to be confirmed.
The game is the follow up to GTA 5, which released way back in 2013, debuting on both Xbox 360 and PS3.
That is two console generations ago, and Rockstar has now confirmed, in a blog post, that they are focusing on bringing GTA 6 to stores soon enough.
And they have again reiterated just how ambitious they are being when it comes to the game, which looks likely to release on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
They said: “Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be.”
Video Games Chronicle has picked up on the news and they claim that the financial guidance that was posted in January by Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, alludes to a potential release date of March 2024.
It has previously been reported that Rockstar are currently focusing exclusively on the development of GTA 6, even pausing their development on Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer mode to ensure that the next GTA hits the heights of GTA 5.
Indeed, the most recent entry into the franchise has now sold in excess of 165 million copies, which equates to roughly five million copies per quarter, every quarter, since 2013.
That is an astonishing sales rate and GTA 6 will have to go a very long way to have any chance of matching that success.
