On the eve of his first game in charge of the club, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag put his squad through their paces in an intense open training session at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium

The Red Devils take on Liverpool in Thailand's capital on Tuesday afternoon in the opening match of their 'Tour 2002.'

The pre-season trip will also see the 13-time Premier League champions play friendly matches against Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa in Australia.

Make no mistake, though, Ten Hag hasn't taken his players halfway around the world to go through the motions in a series of exhibition encounters.

Asked about the importance of Tuesday's friendly with fierce rivals Liverpool in his pre-match press conference, the 52-year-old Dutchman insisted the fixture was a "big game" and a "really big test" for his team.

His approach towards Monday's training session certainly supported that statement.

The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell tweeted out a series of clips from the venue, showing an animated Ten Hag taking to the training pitch alongside his players, intent on being at the heart of the action.

A crowd of around 10,000 fans turned out to see their heroes, cheering wildly as the United squad took part in a 'rondo'. However, things quickly became more intense from there.

Ten Hag then set up an 'attack v defence' drill, with the attacking side enjoying a one-man advantage. As the action unfolds, Ten Hag is seen bellowing at his wide players to move 'inside', committed to getting United's stars used to his style of play as quickly as possible.

Ten Hag, who was described by Whitwell as "purposeful" in his instructions, Ten Hag even introduced a press-up 'punishment' in the centre circle when the defence side scored a goal in the small training nets with which they were playing.

If this is the level of importance that Ten Hag places on preparation during pre-season in the stifling 30C heat of Bangkok, then his expectations seem likely to grow considerably before United take on Brighton in their opening Premier League game on August 7.
