Choosing your greatest ever sportsperson is a game of opinions, no matter which sport that is. The same goes for tennis, although there are three obvious candidates to be discussed as part of the GOAT debate for the sport. Roger Federer sits on 20 Grand Slams. Novak Djokovic sits on 21 Grand Slams and Rafael Nadal sits on 22 Grand Slams. It's quite simple, tennis is their sport and it has been for the past two decades almost. The last Grand Slam went to Djokovic, as he beat Nick Kyrgios on Sunday in the Men’s Wimbledon final, making it the Serbian’s fourth in as many years at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, having also won a further three before his short era of dominance. In the aftermath of the final, an astounding figure shows that in the last 18 years, 63 out of the 75 men’s singles Grand Slams have been won by either Djokovic, Nadal or Federer, showing the trio’s pure dominance of the sport.

Absolutely insane numbers!

Although the latter of the above mentioned three has been out of action for a year due to a knee injury, the Swiss international has vowed to make a return to tennis in September later this year, teaming up with Nadal to compete for the Laver Cup as a duo.

At the age of 36, the Spaniard has had major injury concerns of his own, with the most recent coming in the Wimbledon quarter-final against American Taylor Fritz, where he tore his abdominal, but still went on to win the match before announcing a withdrawal from the next stage of the competition.

Djokovic seems to be destined to break Nadal’s Grand Slam record eventually, with the 35-year-old boasting a clean bill of health over recent years.

With that being said, however, he has had issues of his own recently, with COVID-19 vaccination stances complicating matters for the star in order to compete at the US and Australian Open in recent months, which may possibly continue for years to come.

If nothing does change, he will only be able to compete in two Grand Slams a year; Wimbledon and the French Open.

Whether you side with any one of the three individuals, one thing for certain is, it’ll take an absolute monster of a tennis player to achieve the honours these three man have since the start of their careers.Â
