Manchester United could ‘blow Ajax out of the water’ for RB Leipzig striker Brian Brobbey, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The 20-year-old is reportedly the subject of interest from both the Red Devils and the Amsterdam giants, but it’s the former who carry the biggest financial might.

What is the latest news involving Brobbey?

German outlet Sport Bild recently reported that United were hoping to hijack Brobbey’s proposed move from Leipzig to Ajax as Erik ten Hag wants to be reunited with him.

It’s claimed that the Netherlands Under-21 international was closing in on a €15 million (£12.7m) switch to the Johan Cruyff ArenA until Ten Hag phoned him to try and turn his head.

Nevertheless, the Manchester Evening News claims the efforts of United’s new boss are not expected to be enough with the club’s hierarchy anticipating that Brobbey will still sign for Ajax.

The Old Trafford outfit could be forced into the market for a new number nine following the surprise revelation that Cristiano Ronaldo has asked to leave for the second time in his career.

What has Crook said about Brobbey?

Crook believes Brobbey’s ‘preferred destination’ is Ajax but reckons the deal will ultimately ‘come down to finances’, and area United will have the advantage in.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think Ten Hag sees an opportunity with Brobbey. He’s obviously someone he's worked with before.

“I think Brobbey's preferred destination is Ajax, but again, it will come down to finances. You'd imagine United have the ability, if they want to, to blow Ajax out of the water.”

Would Brobbey be a good signing?

Brobbey rose through the ranks at boyhood club Ajax before joining Leipzig on a free transfer last July in search of regular game time, with Julian Nagelsmann comparing him to Romelu Lukaku.

However, the 6 foot ace failed to find the back of the net in 13 outings for the Red Bulls and started just two games in all competitions before returning to Ajax on loan in January.

Under the tutelage of Ten Hag, Brobbey rediscovered his best form once again, registering seven goals and one assist in 11 Eredivisie outings, helping fire his side to the league title.

Ten Hag outlined his desire to retain the services of the promising attacker, stating that he could have a ‘bright future’ at the club.

“We really want to keep him,” he told ESPN. “He can sign a nice contract and have a bright future here. He is young, eager, and has all the qualities you wish to see in an Ajax striker.”

It remains to be seen if Ten Hag can convince Brobbey to turn his back on Ajax for the third time in his short career, and United may begin to worry about their attacking options if not.
