Football is a ruthless business, especially when it comes to managers. And Gus Poyet learned just that back in 2013 when he was sacked by Brighton & Hove Albion in the most brutal way possible. The Uruguayan, who played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, was appointed Brighton manager in 2009.He enjoyed success at the club as he got them promoted from League One to the Championship. However, relations between Poyet and the club started to turn sour in the 2012/13 season.Poyet guided Brighton to a 4th place finish, but they failed to secure promotion to the Premier League as they were beaten in the playoffs.Poyet was suspended for comments made after the playoff defeat to Crystal Palace, where he spoke openly about his future and hinted he may move on.Gus Poyet at Brighton in 2013BRIGHTON, ENGLAND - MARCH 17: Brighton manager Gus Poyet looks on during the npower Championship match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace at Amex Stadium on March 17, 2013 in Brighton, England. (Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)The midfielder, who played 26 times for his country, decided to take up some punditry work for the BBC that summer. He was covering the Confederations Cup match between Spain and Nigeria on June 22, 2013.During the first-half, Brighton released a statement confirming they had relieved Poyet from his duties. He learned he had been sacked by Brighton after being told by a crew member. His exit was discussed at half-time and it made for some surreal TV.

Mark Chapman said: "We're going to start half-time by talking about Gus [Poyet]. It's been a slightly odd 45 minutes for us in the studio and particularly for Gus. Because, after three-and-a-half years as Brighton manager, whilst we've been on air this evening, Gus has been told his contract has been terminated by Brighton & Hove Albion."

Chapman proceeded to read out the statement from The Seagulls, which claimed they had informed Poyet of the decision.

Poyet refuted that claim, responding: "I’ve still had no communication from the club.

“From what I read from the statement, I am unemployed. My idea now is to appeal and get back to the job I’ve been doing until 7.30.

“I can’t go into details of the future. It’s just a matter of being calm and make sure you make the right decision. I’ve been trying to establish in the last 45 minutes what my rights are now.

“I’m probably the first to be in this position. Everyone can make their own conclusions about the way I have been informed by you.

“I think the BBC got a great story forever really because a manager getting the information that he’s been released from his employment during the time of a programme is quite surprising.

“Are they [the club] messing with my career? We will see, it’s too early to say. I am looking forward to clearing this.”

Poyet took legal action against Brighton but dropped it after reaching a settlement with the club.

Now 54, he has been manager of Greece since February.
