Newcastle United are working on signing a target unknown to the media, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Tyneside club have already brought in Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett this summer, and it looks like someone else could be about to join them at St James' Park.

What is the latest transfer news involving Newcastle?

Newcastle have not been able to keep all of their transfer targets secret.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Arnaud Kalimuendo is one man who is currently thought to be on the Magpies' radar after they pulled the plug on a deal for Reims' Hugo Ekitike.

According to Media Foot, they are just one side from England who want to sign the 20-year-old this window.

Leeds United winger Jack Harrison is also being linked with a move to St James' Park, with the Englishman being viewed as a cheaper alternative to Bayer Leverkusen's Moussa Diaby.

What has Jones said about Newcastle's transfer targets?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Newcastle are being extremely secretive with one name right now and are working on a deal to sign him.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: "It sounds like a lot of work is going on at Newcastle this week. We know about the Diaby and [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin links, but I think they are talking to agents about someone else significant right now.

"It’s a mystery who it is. I’m trying to work it out, but from talking to a few people, it feels like something is going on."

Where will Newcastle strengthen next?

Newcastle have done good work this summer by bringing in Botman, Pope and Targett permanently. Their backline should be much stronger this upcoming season as a result.

With the goalkeeper, left-back and centre-back positions having now been addressed, you would expect the club to now put all of their focus on signing a new forward.

While it was only in January Newcastle strengthened up front with the addition of Chris Wood from Burnley, it is clear more work needs to be done there.

The 30-year-old was not exactly prolific for Eddie Howe's side during the second half of last season, scoring just twice following his arrival at St James' Park, while Callum Wilson struggled with injury.

Considering that, buying a new No.9 is likely to be Newcastle's priority right now, so it would not be a surprise if the mystery target was someone who plays in that position.
