West Ham: £47k-a-week star's future 'up in the air' at London Stadium

West Ham manager David Moyes looking bemused

The future of West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek is ‘up in the air right now,’ according to journalist Dean Jones.

Soucek has played a pivotal part in the capital club’s success over the past couple of campaigns, but negotiations over a new contract have reached an impasse, sparking speculation over his next steps.

What is the latest news involving Soucek?

Back in April, 90min reported that talks over a new deal between the 27-year-old’s representatives and West Ham’s hierarchy were put on hold at the request of manager David Moyes.

It was originally stated that discussions were set to resume following the conclusion of 2021/22 although an agreement has yet to be reached.

Consequently, several sides have been credited with an interest in Soucek’s services, with Aston Villa, Everton and Newcastle United reportedly amongst his potential suitors.

The Sun claim that West Ham would be prepared to listen to offers in the region of £30 million for the Czech Republic international, who has two years remaining on his current £47,000-per-week contract.

What has Jones said about Soucek?

Jones believes that Soucek’s situation has ‘dragged on further than most people thought,’ and that clubs such as Villa are keeping a close eye on any developments.

He told GiveMeSport: “The Soucek situation is really interesting, and I think that it’s probably dragged on further than most people thought, and it’s becoming a bit more uncertain than most people thought.

“So, his futures up in the air right now, and I think that clubs like Aston Villa are just hanging in there to wait and see whether he genuinely might become available.”

Who could replace Soucek?

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth disclosed that West Ham recently had a €23m (£19.6m) bid for Amadou Onana turned down by LOSC Lille.

The 20-year-old only arrived at the Ligue 1 side from Hamburger SV 12 months ago but could be on the move once again following an impressive debut campaign for Les Dogues.

Another possible replacement for Soucek is Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans. Club insider ExWHUemployee has stated that Arsenal’s indecision could tempt the Irons into making a move for the 25-year-old.

What nickname is given to West Ham United?

Tielemans only has 12 months remaining on his contract and had been expected to sign for the Gunners before they cooled their interest in him.

West Ham would have to splash out around £30m to snap up the Belgium international, and he would surely soften the blow of losing Soucek should he depart.
