Robbie Savage is so proud after watching son, Charlie, produce ‘Maradona turn’ v Mo Salah

Robbie Savage expressed his pride after watching his son, Charlie, produce a composed performance for Manchester United against Liverpool during Tuesday’s pre-season friendly in Bangkok.

Charlie, who turned 19 in May, played the entire second half after coming on for Fred, scorer of United’s second of three first-half goals at the Rajamangala National Stadium.

The teenage midfielder kept things simple in possession, worked hard to win the ball back and didn’t look overawed by the occasion.

At one point, the youngster even bravely produced a piece of skill against Liverpool’s star forward, Mohamed Salah.

This delighted his dad, who tweeted: ‘So so proud @charliesavage84, thought you were terrific, a Maradona turn on edge of your own box, who did you get that from. Finally a savage that can play.’

The former Wales international-turned-pundit then tweeted a clip of the aforementioned turn, adding: ‘Love to see it @charliesavage84, confident and brave on edge of your own box against the best player in Premier League Mo Salah.’

Andy Cole impressed with Charlie Savage’s performance

Also impressed with Charlie’s performance was Man Utd hero Andy Cole, who told MUTV, per The Metro:  “He is a young boy being given an opportunity and I thought he did really well.

“He’s playing against Liverpool there. I know he has done it when he has been playing against the kids and that, but this is pre-season, this is what you are trying to get to.

“I thought he did really well when he came on.

“The higher you go up in midfield, you have got to do that, you have got to keep the ball. And he did that today.”

Emotional moment Charlie Savage made Man Utd first-team debut

Robbie was memorably providing co-commentary on Man Utd’s Champions League clash against Young Boys in December when his son made his first-team debut for the Red Devils.

Fighting back the tears, he said: “I’m starting to tear up because Charlie has achieved so much in his young life.

“He’s never been top of the class but his application, his work ethic and desire has got him to where he is. My father who’s sadly not with us would be looking down proud of his grandson. His nan at home will be in tears now.

“He’s a great kid and he’ll do everything. He’s a great player and has a wonderful left foot. He’s one very lucky boy but a boy who’s worked incredibly hard.”

And then Charlie entered the fray in the closing stages, Robbie added: “Coming on for Manchester Utd, Charlie Savage for Juan Mata…”

“Wow, I never believed I’d say those words here at Manchester United, what a proud day!”

“For my boy. All the hard work. What a proud day for me, his mother, his nana, his grandparents and most importantly for that boy there: Charlie Savage. What an amazing moment for him.”
