Newcastle United have enquired about the potential transfer of Leicester City and Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans, according to Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports.

The 25-year-old has just one year remaining on his deal at the King Power Stadium, and has attracted interest from a number of Premier League sides this summer.

What’s the latest on Tielemans?

Despite Newcastle’s interest, Arsenal are said to be confident about securing the signing of Tielemans, and are ready to launch a £30m bid for the midfielder according to The Sun.

However, despite this claim, news on the Belgian’s move to Arsenal seems to have cooled, with Freddie Paxton claiming that the £49.5m-rated man is high on the list of Arteta’s priorities but there has been no offer made as of yet.

A number of other Premier League sides have been linked with a move for Tielemans this summer including Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but it now appears that Eddie Howe’s side have joined that race.

And Jacobs believes that Newcastle’s sporting director Dan Ashworth has made contact about the potential signing of the 52-time Belgium international this summer.

What has Jacobs said about Tielemans?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Tielemans has crept on to their radar, too.

“Dan Ashworth has made enquiries.

“It’s nothing more than that at this stage but it’s one to watch.”

Would Tielemans be a good signing for Newcastle?

Tielemans would likely prove to be the type of marquee signing that would really begin to excite Newcastle fans, even after the £35m signing of Sven Botman from Lille this summer.

The 5 foot 9 midfield maestro made 50 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester side last season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in that time, according to Transfermarkt.

On paper, it seems like he could form an excellent partnership with Bruno Guimarães in the Magpies midfield next season, with both players likely to prove to be a goal threat from the middle of the park at St. James’ Park.

Tielemans is not afraid to have a crack at goal, and this is proven by the fact that he ranked in the top 6% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues and European competition for total shots per 90 minutes last season (1.86) according to FBref.

And the Belgian has generally been a consistently impressive performer for the Foxes, with an average SofaScore rating of 7.08, displaying his general excellence in controlling the Leicester midfield.

It may be early stages, but the fact that Newcastle are linked with a player of the calibre and quality of Tielemans will certainly get fans of the Toon very excited heading into the Premier League campaign.
