Newcastle United are interested in potentially signing a young central midfielder this transfer window, according to freelance journalist Jacque Talbot.

Eddie Howe’s side have made three permanent additions at St. James’ Park this summer, but are looking for more ahead of September’s transfer deadline.

What’s the latest at Newcastle?

Sven Botman has been Newcastle’s biggest signing of the summer thus far, with the Dutch centre-back joining the Premier League side in a deal with Ligue 1 side Lille, thought to be worth around £35m.

Meanwhile, Burnley and England goalkeeper Nick Pope has also made the move up to St. James’ Park, having made an immediate return to the Premier League following the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship last season, in a deal reported to be worth £10m.

And the other bit of business that Howe’s side have made this season, is turning Matt Targett’s loan from Aston Villa into a permanent move, in a deal which is thought to be worth £15m.

And Talbot believes that the club could now be looking to invest in a young central midfielder this summer, with the Magpies likely to bring this type of player in towards the end of the transfer window.

What has Talbot said about Newcastle?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “There’s been some murmurs about a central midfielder [at Newcastle].

“They're looking for a very young talent and if there's one available, who can come in for a little bit of money, they’d do that towards the end of the window.”

What next for Newcastle?

A young midfield addition would suit Howe’ side down to a tee, with the Brazilian pairing of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton making the middle of the park their own at the moment, so a young talent who could potentially get experience of being in the first-team would be ideal.

In terms of other rumours, the Toon have been linked with a move for Lyon and Brazil attacking midfielder Lucas Paquetá, with Arsenal also thought to be interested in a move for the 24-year-old.

Lee Ryder of ChronicleLive also reports that winger Maxwel Cornet and Emmanuel Dennis have been offered to the Magpies, by relegated duo Burnley and Watford respectively.

The same report also suggests that Armando Broja of Chelsea has been looked at, to fill a spot in centre-forward, with only Chris Wood and Callum Wilson remaining as Newcastle’s two striker options.

And Sky Sports have also suggested that the Toon have enquired about the availability of 21-year-old Everton winger Anthony Gordon, who could be acquired for a fee of approximately £35m.

Whatever happens in the summer transfer window, you would imagine that following the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s takeover of Newcastle last October, the remaining months of the window are going to provide plenty of excitement for Magpies fans.
