England blow Northern Ireland away

It was another dominant performance for England at St Mary’s Stadium this evening, even with manager Sarina Wiegman testing positive for COVID-19 just hours before. The Dutchwoman watched the match from the squad's base camp instead, and she must have been pleased by what she saw.

Fran Kirby opened the scoring with a sublime shot from outside the penalty box, before Beth Mead increased her chances of winning the Golden Boot with her fifth goal of the tournament.

In the second half, substitute Alessia Russo made a claim for a starting spot with two goals, before Kelsie Burrows added to Northern Ireland’s misery with an own goal.

"To come on and score is great," Russo told BBC Sport. "I just got in the right place at the right time and was able to put them in the back of the net.

"I should have finished [a third chance] but we will move on to the next game. I've been watching Ian Wright's goals this week and maybe that inspired me. The girls were brilliant in the first half too."

More than 30,000 jubilant fans packed out St Mary’s to wave off England into the quarter-finals – is it really coming home?
