Rangers’ new signing Rabbi Matondo could form a fearsome partnership with fellow winger Ryan Kent, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 21-year-old has arrived at Ibrox from German outfit Schalke for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year contract as he looks to build on an impressive 2021/22 campaign.

What is the latest news involving Matondo?

Matondo, a former Manchester City youth player, made the switch to the Bundesliga in January 2019, following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho.

However, things didn’t quite go to plan for the Wales international. He found the back of the net on just two occasions for Die Königsblauen in 31 appearances and was shipped out on loan to Stoke City for the second half of 2020/21.

Matondo’s fortunes failed to improve while he was with the Potters, though, scoring only once in 11 appearances.

Yet the 5 foot 9 ace, who is valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, revived his stalling career last term when he racked up 12 goal contributions in 27 games for Belgian outfit Cercle Bruges, helping them to a midtable finish.

And now he has earned himself a permanent move to Europa League finalists Rangers, who have ambitions to wrestle back their Scottish Premiership crown from Celtic.

What has O’Rourke said about Matondo?

When asked if Kent, who is valued at £15.75m by Transfermarkt, and Matondo could form an exciting partnership, O’Rourke was very confident they could.

He told GiveMeSport: “Yeah, definitely. I think we all know what Ryan Kent offers to Rangers, he’s a very skilful player, was instrumental in reaching the Europa League final last year as well.

“Slightly different player to Matondo. Matondo is probably out-and-out pace and very direct, while Kent is your more skilful winger who can provide goals as well as scoring goals.

“So, you have the makings of two good players if they were to play on opposite wings and would really provide the ammunition for the Rangers attack next season.”

Where would Matondo fit in?

Matondo has predominantly featured on the right-wing throughout his career despite being right-footed, using his explosive pace to breeze past defenders before setting up his teammates for a simple finish.

On the other hand, Kent almost exclusively lines up on the opposite flank, cutting inside onto his favoured right foot to unleash a strike at goal.

Therefore, the electrifying duo could provide the perfect balance out wide for Rangers, and everyone associated with the club will surely be hoping Kent puts pen to paper on a new contract and sticks around for a little while longer.
