David Beckham was full of praise for the Lionesses after their impressive 5-0 victory against Northern Ireland at Euro 2022

Fran Kirby opened the scoring for England, before Beth Mead grabbed her fifth goal of the tournament.

Substitute Alessia Russo scored twice in the second-half, before Kelsie Burrows added to Northern Ireland’s misery with an own goal in the 76th minute.

It was yet another record-breaking performance from England, who have now scored the most group stage goals in European Championship history following 1-0 and 8-0 victories against Austria and Northern Ireland respectively.

These 14 goals surpassed the 11 goals scored by Germany in the group stage at Euro 2001, and the nine goals scored in the men’s tournament by France in 1984 and the Netherlands in 2008.

Beckham was clearly dazzled by the Lionesses’ performance, leaving a comment on their Instagram page: "Amazing result @lionesses @england 👏🏻🙌🏻"

The England legend, who played for his country 115 times, has shown his support for the women’s team in the past.

In fact, he brought his daughter Harper to England’s quarter-final clash against Norway at the 2019 World Cup. The pair were delighted as the Lionesses triumphed 3-0.

After their dominant performance in the Euro 2022 group stage, England will play their quarter-final on Wednesday against Spain or Denmark. They will discover their opponent this evening as Group B comes to a conclusion.

It is now impossible to ignore the Lionesses’ progress at Euro 2022, with Russo’s second goal against Northern Ireland drawing plaudits in particular.

Some people have even gone as far as comparing Russo’s skill to Dennis Bergkamp’s legendary turn on former Newcastle player Nikos Dabizas.

But Russo told BBC Sport that she had been inspired by a different Arsenal legend.

“To come on and score is great,” she said. “I just got in the right place at the right time and was able to put them in the back of the net.

“I should have finished [a third chance] but we will move on to the next game. I’ve been watching Ian Wright’s goals this week and maybe that inspired me. The girls were brilliant in the first half too.”
