Reece James scored a comical own goal before Mason Mount won it with a stunner as Chelsea beat Club America 2-1 in Nevada.

Goals from Mount and Timo Werner spared James' blushes as Thomas Tuchel's side overcame their Mexican opponents in their latest pre-season friendly.

The Blues had gone ahead five minutes into the second half thanks to Timo Werner's strike.

However, the scores were level just five minutes later thanks to James' embarrassing gaffe.

The right-back received the ball just outside his own penalty area but, without looking, turned back towards his own goal and attempted to play the ball to goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

Unfortunately for James, Bettinelli had moved away from his goal to give him an angle to play the ball back.

It resulted in James passing the ball straight into the back of net for the equaliser.

Oh dear.

Mount's brilliant strike towards the end of the match secured the win for Chelsea - much to James' relief.

Mount collected the ball outside Club America's penalty area, put one defender on the floor before smashing the ball past the goalkeeper.

What. A. Strike.

There was no debut from Chelsea's new signing, Raheem Sterling. He may have to wait for Chelsea's next fixture against Arsenal to make his first appearance.

One man who is delighted that Sterling has joined Chelsea is James - only because he won't have to play against him again.

"Playing against him is a nightmare, so I'm pretty happy that he's here now and I don't need to play against him anymore!" James admitted.

"The way he plays, he's so small and sharp. He looks small but you don't realise how strong he is. He never stops and is always trying to run in behind and stuff.

"I remember he had a good game in the Champions League final. It was an even battle - he beat me a few times and I won duels a few times as well, so it was a tough game between us.

"He can be quiet and he can be loud as well but he's great to be around and a top guy off the pitch. He will bring good energy.

"On the pitch I don't really need to talk too much about what he does. He's been at the top of the Premier League for the past 10 years and he's won a number of titles so hopefully he can help bring some special moments to us as well."
