Tottenham Hotspur have ‘liked’ Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison for ‘a long time’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Antonio Conte’s charges have been one of the most active sides in the opening weeks of the transfer window and could be set to make further additions to their first-team squad.

What is the latest news involving Spurs?

Despite their being almost two months of the summer window remaining, Spurs have already brought in five new signings.

Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Fraser Forster, Clement Lenglet and Ivan Perisic have all arrived at Hotspur Way, and Conte has reportedly now turned his attention to signing a playmaker.

That’s according to the Evening Standard, and it seems as though Maddison is at the top of Conte’s wish list.

Paul O’Keefe, who is a FA Registered Intermediary, has claimed that Tottenham are ‘very seriously considering’ making a move for the England international ahead of next season.

The 25-year-old still has two years remaining on his current £110,000-per-week contract, though, and a £50 million price tag has previously been mooted, meaning he won’t come cheap.

What has Jones said about Maddison?

Jones believes that Maddison would be ‘an amazing player’ for Tottenham to sign with the new Premier League campaign appearing on the horizon, although reckons Leicester will be determined to retain their star performer.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “It would be an amazing player for them to land just as the seasons getting underway.

“There's no doubt they like him, they've liked him for a long time. I think the problem they've got is that James Maddison is Leicester's best player.”

Would Maddison be a good signing?

Maddison has gone from strength to strength since signing for Leicester from Norwich City back in 2018, helping his side claim the FA Cup and the Community Shield since then.

The creative talent has also registered 45 goals and 32 assists in 169 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions, highlighting his potential to play at the highest level.

However, questions would surely be asked regarding where Maddison would fit into Conte’s plans as the Italian tactician has almost exclusively lined up in a 3-4-3 formation during his time at Spurs.

But the Italian tactician could already have a plan in place for Englishman’s potential arrival in north London.

Conte switch to a 3-5-2 setup in the early stages of his title-winning campaign with Inter, allowing Christian Eriksen to dictate proceeding through the middle, and a similar tactic could be deployed should Maddison make the switch.
