Tottenham Hotspur have ‘been offered’ Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 28-year-old has reportedly been deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou by manager Xavi and could return to English shores ahead of next season.

What is the latest news involving Depay?

Spanish outlet Sport have claimed that Tottenham are prepared to pay €17 million (£14.4m) to secure the signature of Memphis but Barca are demanding €20m (£17m).

It’s claimed that Spurs are reluctant to match the demands of the Catalan giants, though, as the Netherlands international only has two years left on his contract.

Memphis is said be to be ‘comfortable’ at Barca and was previously keen to put pen to paper on fresh terms, although is now concerned over his game time.

The arrivals of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski from Leeds United and Bayern Munich, respectively, have pushed the creative talent down the Blaugrana pecking order.

A new challenge could await Memphis, therefore, but it remains to be seen if Tottenham will offer him a way off the Barca bench.

What has Jones said about Memphis?

Memphis has often split opinion throughout his career, shining for PSV Eindhoven, Lyon and his nation, while struggling to hit the heights for Manchester United and Barca.

Jones believes the controversial character would represent a ‘luxury signing’ for Spurs and reckons he could be ‘a bit too risky’ for them.

He told GiveMeSport: “He definitely would be a luxury signing, he fits that bill. I don't really see this as a good fit, I think it's a bit too risky. He's been offered to them; I know that much. But I don't think they need him to be honest.”

Would Memphis be a good signing?

Memphis made a fast start to his Barca career, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in his opening 15 La Liga games.

However, the departure of former manager Ronald Koeman alongside two separate injury issues and the acquisitions of Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw him feature less prominently in the second half of the campaign.

In total, Memphis found the back of the net on 13 occasions in 2021/22, setting up two further strikes in 37 appearances across all competitions.

If Antonio Conte can extract his best form, then Memphis could be a valuable asset to call upon, although it’s possible the Tottenham boss may view him as an unnecessary gamble.
