Every football team has their own training methods, but few are as peculiar as Iceland’s. Hilarious footage has emerged of the Iceland Women’s team, who are currently competing at Euro 2022, preparing for their final group stage match against France with a bizarre training game. The exercise sees the Iceland squad split in two and sat down in two separate lines. The player at the front of the line starts near the touchline with a ball on a cone, before proceeding to pass the ball over their head to the next player. This sounds easy enough but once a player has passed the ball, they must run to the end of the line, ready to receive the ball from the player at the back once it arrives. This sequence continues until one team has made it all the way to the other side of the pitch. See for yourself here.

As of now, nobody is quite sure if the game has a proper name or if it has been invented by the Icelandic team. However, one thing that’s for sure is that it looks seriously fun.

Fans react to ‘chaotic’ game

Understandably, fans had more than a few words to say about the game.

The official Women’s Super League page, who posted the initial video, wrote: “We don’t know what this game is called, but we want to give it a go.”

Meanwhile, another said: “I definitely want to see this everywhere.”

Another echoed this idea, stating: “Love it!”

A third joked that the name of the game could simply be called “pass the ball,” though this is clearly oversimplifying what appears to be an incredibly chaotic exercise.

Quarter-finals at stake

So far, Iceland have drawn both their games in the competition, against Belgium and Italy respectively.

They currently sit second in Group D but face group winners France in their final game.

A win will see them qualify for the quarter-finals, where they will face Sweden on Friday.

Iceland

However, if they lose or draw the game then qualification is out of their hands. Instead, the team will have to rely on a favourable result in the Italy vs Belgium game.

Both Italy and Belgium are a point behind Iceland, meaning if either of them wins, Iceland would be out. If it is a draw, it may come down to goal difference.

Iceland currently have the best goal difference of the three teams but a heavy defeat to France could change all that.
