Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is on course to stay at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The £27m-rated forward wants to leave the club following their sixth place finish, but his options are limited.

What's the latest news involving Ronaldo?

According to The Times, Ronaldo has expressed his desire to leave United to continue playing in the Champions League, having done so for the best part of 20 years.

The 37-year-old made a sensational return to Old Trafford less than 12 months ago and he ended the season as the club's topscorer with 24 goals, 18 of which came in the Premier League.

Ronaldo's exploits couldn't prevent United from missing out on a place in Europe's elite competition, though, with their sixth place spot only good enough to see them qualify for the Europa League.

But the experienced frontman is looking short of potential destinations right now, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich, two clubs that were linked with his signature, both recently pulling out of the race.

As a result, Jones reckons the current state of play is that Ronaldo is set to remain with the Red Devils.

What did Jones say about Ronaldo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "We still don't know what's happening with Ronaldo. The word I'm getting is that he's most likely to stay at this point and we will probably see a PR move put into place in the next couple of weeks if no transfer can open up, that he's happy with the work that has been done at United and he is satisfied that can be part of a team that might be going somewhere."

Could Ronaldo still leave United?

As Jones alluded to, it's going to be really difficult for Ronaldo to get a move. Not only can not many clubs afford his £500,000 per-week wages, but his current options are minimal.

With Chelsea ruled out, staying in the Premier League looks almost impossible, and in terms of European giants, it leaves just Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Ronaldo could seek a return to Sporting Lisbon, which would fulfil his needs of playing in the Champions League, while a switch to the MLS has been mentioned, although he's already rejected an offer from Inter Miami.

Therefore, with less than three weeks until the new Premier league season gets underway, it appears there's every chance Ronaldo will be lining up in the famous red, black, and white.
