The Euro 2022 group stages have flown by and the tournament is more than living up to the hype.

We’ve had record scorelines, record goalscorers and record attendances so far and we’ve still got the knockout stages to come.

While every side has had some standout performers, there’s been a handful who have particularly impressed us.

Here are our top five players of the group stages as well as an honourable mention to one star who has narrowly missed out.

Honourable mention

Mapi Leon

The Spanish centre-back is effortlessly composed on the ball and has a keen eye for a pass as well.

Against Finland, the Barcelona star registered two assists, created six chances and won 100 per cent of her attempted tackles.

Leon was in fine form against Denmark as well, keeping a clean sheet and completing 97 per cent of passes.

Beth Mead

Everything Mead has touched in this tournament has turned to goals. The England winger has scored five times so far in three games, including a hat-trick against Norway.

Her tally means she is the first player ever to score five goals in the group stages of a European Championships.

The Arsenal star has also scored the joint most goals for England in a single Euros, drawing level with Alan Shearer, who achieved the same feat at Euro 1996.

England's Mead celebrates.

Kosovare Asllani

Asllani is a Swedish veteran, who remains in search of a first major title at international level.

The 32-year-old won silver medals at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and finished third with Sweden at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Asllani has been in exceptional form so far at this tournament and netted a penalty against Portugal as Sweden won 5-0.

The forward also pulled off a magical assist against the Netherlands, courtesy of an audacious nutmeg.

Grace Geyoro

It was the dream start to Euro 2022 for Geyoro as she scored a hat-trick against Italy inside 45 minutes.

The 25-year-old was France’s youngest player at 2017 but has developed impressively since then and is now one of the team’s most influential players.

With Marie-Antoinette Katoto now out injured, a lot will be expected of Geyoro to step up in her absence.

Alessia Russo

Remarkably, Russo is yet to start a game at these Euros, but her impact off the bench has been nothing short of outstanding.

The England striker has scored three times as a substitute and sent social media wild with a ‘Bergkampesque’ turn against Northern Ireland last week.

Many have speculated whether Sarina Wiegman will opt to start Russo instead of Ellen White against Spain on Wednesday. However, the Lionesses boss has kept her cards close to her chest.

Lina Magull

Germany went somewhat under the radar in the build-up to the competition but comfortably defeated Denmark and Spain en route to topping Group B.

Magull was a constant threat against Denmark and rifled home an unstoppable shot to open Germany’s account at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The midfielder was rested for Germany’s last game against Finland but will be fit and ready to fire against Austria on Thursday night.
