Crystal Palace: £30m star could be attracted by Selhurst Park move

Patrick Vieira taking charge of a Premier League game for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will face a ‘big battle’ for the signature of Wolverhampton Wanderers attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The in-demand 22-year-old is believed to be on the radar of several Premier League clubs following a successful season-long loan spell with Sheffield United throughout 2021/22.

What is the latest news involving Gibbs-White?

Gibbs-White registered 13 goals and 10 assists in 40 appearances for the Blades last term, firing them to the play-offs before being named their Player of the Season.

Last month, The Athletic revealed that Wolves planned to offer the England Under-21 international a new contract with his existing deal set to expire in the summer of 2024.

However, Gibbs-White is yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms with his boyhood club, opening the door to his potentially imminent exit.

Sky Sports have reported that Everton have already seen an opening offer worth £25 million rejected by Wolves for the creative talent, with the Midlands outfit expected to hold out for around £30m.

And talkSPORT have now claimed that Palace are now hopeful of beating the Toffees and newly-promoted Nottingham Forest to Gibbs-White’s signature.

What has O’Rourke said about Gibbs-White?

O’Rourke believes that the Eagles are now a club ‘going places’ under the tutelage of Patrick Vieira and that that could play a part in Gibbs-White’s thinking when he decides where to ply his trade next term.

He told GiveMeSport: “It does seem to be a club going places, Palace. A young vibrant side now under Vieira as well.

“So, I’m sure that will play a part in players’ thinking if they were to move to Palace. But it’s going to be a big battle, I think, for Gibbs-White if he does end up leaving Wolves this summer.”

Where would Gibbs-White fit in at Palace?

With former loanee Conor Gallagher returning to parent club Chelsea following a productive campaign at Selhurst Park, replacing his output from the middle of the park will be vital for Vieira.

Palace have already signed Cheick Doucoure from RC Lens, but the 22-year-old is more defensive-minded and is likely to play a more conservative role than the one Gallagher excelled in.

What year did Crystal Palace legend Ian Wright leave the club?

And that’s where Gibbs-White could prove to be an extremely astute acquisition for the south London outfit.

It remains to be seen if the Palace hierarchy are prepared to pay £30m for Gibbs-White, a fee that would make him their record purchase, but he could go some way to softening the blow of Gallagher’s exit.
