In a historic move, EA Sports have added womenâs club teams to FIFA for the first time ever.Gamers will be able to choose between teams from the Womenâs Super League in England and the Division 1 Féminine in France. There are 12 teams in the WSL, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The D1 Féminine features Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon, Montpellier and Paris FC.This will give gamers the opportunity to play as stars such as Vivianne Miedema, Sam Kerr, Wendie Renard, Ada Hegerberg and Marie-Antoinette Katoto. The 2023 Womenâs World Cup, set to be held in Australia and New Zealand, will be another feature added to FIFA 23.This announcement has been made just days after Sam Kerr was unveiled as the cover star for the game, alongside PSG star Kylian Mbappe. It is the first time a womenâs football player has appeared on a global FIFA cover, although Steph Catley and Alex Morgan featured on the respective covers of the Australian and US editions in 2016.Kerr has truly established herself as one of the best in womenâs football, earning her second successive Golden Boot in the Womenâs Super League last season. In fact, she is the only player to win the Golden Boot in three different leagues â the NWSL, the W-League and the WSL.The 28-year-old is also a star for her country, with many of her 110 appearances for Australia coming over three World Cups and two Olympic Games. The latest updates from EA Sports are a sign of the publisherâs efforts to increase female representation in their flagship football video game.âIâm delighted that the Barclays Womenâs Super League will be one of the first womenâs club competitions to feature in EA SPORTS FIFA 23, with the franchise historically having one of the largest and most engaged gaming communities in the world,â said Navin Singh, The FAâs Commercial Director. âThe added visibility a global brand like EA SPORTS will provide for our league, teams and players cannot be underestimated. "This very much supports our ambition to accelerate the growth of the womenâs game in England, and highlights our commitment to open up the Barclays Womenâs Super League, and make it even more accessible, to new audiences around the globe."Francois Vasseur, Marketing Director of the French Football Federation, added: "This partnership between D1 Arkema and EA SPORTS is excellent news for the league, the clubs, the players, but also for the fans who, starting this year, will be able to discover their favourite players and participate in exclusive activations. "It represents a huge step for D1 Arkema as a leading league with a worldwide following."
Have there been women's teams on FIFA before?
Womenâs teams have featured in the popular franchise since FIFA 16, but only international sides up until this point.
Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the United States were the 12 teams initially added to the game.
This has since been expanded to include Belgium, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Scotland.
Gamers can currently play as women in FIFA 22âs Pro Clubs mode, and former Arsenal star Alex Scott became the first English-speaking female broadcaster on the game this year.
All the signs point towards the inclusion of more domestic womenâs football teams on EA Sports FC, the new branding for the game following the end of EAâs two-decade long partnership with FIFA.
Womenâs football teams have also been used across the branding for EA Sports FC, which is set to be released next year.
