Conor Gallagher took one of the worst penalties seen in a very long time as Chelsea were beaten in a shoot-out by Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC.

Christian Pulisic gave Chelsea the lead in the 30th minute at the Venue Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina.

But Charlotte FC, who were only formed in December 2019, were handed the opportunity to level the scores in the dying seconds of the game when Trevoh Chalobah was penalised for blocking a shot with his hand.

Daniel Rios stepped up and cooly dispatched the ball past Edouard Mendy, forcing a penalty shoot-out in the process.

Mendy was also unable to stop any of Charlotte’s five penalties in the shoot-out as the American outfit secured the biggest victory in their short history.

Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling all netted a spot-kick for Chelsea, but Gallagher will have nightmares about his attempt from 12 yards.

The England international, 22, appeared to try a Panenka (we think) but got it horribly, horribly wrong.

Charlotte FC goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega stood still on his line as the ball rolled kindly into his hands.

Gallagher’s attempt had no disguise and the ball barely got off the ground.

Dear oh dear.

When Panenkas go wrong, they can look absolutely awful.

Let’s check out some of the reaction from social media:

Which other teams do Chelsea face in pre-season?

Thomas Tuchel will just be glad this happened in a pre-season friendly and not a competitive match, although the fact it happened at all may not sit well with the Chelsea boss.

This was a game Chelsea were expected to win comfortably.

Thomas Tuchel

The Blues take on Arsenal in their next pre-season friendly, followed by a game against Udinese in Italy on July 29.

Tuchel’s side then get their 2022-23 Premier League season underway with a trip to Frank Lampard’s Everton on August 6.

Gallagher, who impressed during his loan spell with Crystal Palace last season, is expected to become a first-team player at Stamford Bridge this term but will need to pick himself up after this embarrassing penalty.
