Minnesota 4-0 Everton: Dele Alli's woeful miss summed up Toffees' night

Dele Alli missed an absolute sitter for Everton last night and rival fans are loving it.

Everton continued their pre-season tour of the United States in a disappointing 4-0 dismantlement at the hands of Western Conference side Minnesota United.

It’s a second consecutive defeat for the Blues after they were previously beaten 2-0 by Arsenal last Sunday.

A night to forget for Lampard and his boys

Minnesota opened the scoring courtesy of an Emmanuel Reynoso spot kick in the 18th minute.

Everton’s latest signing James Tarkowski then contributed to the MLS side’s cause, firing the ball into the back of his own net to double their advantage 13 minutes later.

Before Luis Amarillo added a third after he capitalised on yet more awful defensive work around the Toffees penalty area.

Jordan Pickford was visibly furious with his teammates after the third hit the back of the net and it meant that Everton went into the break trailing by three goals after a frantic first-half.

Unfortunately, though, after re-grouping in the dressing room and no doubt getting some hard truths from Frank Lampard, little changed in the second 45 minutes.

Everton did little to trouble their opposition’s goal – besides one moment which we’ll get to shortly – and actually conceded a fourth to Abu Danladi with just 15 minutes to go.

All in all, it was a disastrous night of preparations for the Merseyside club and Lampard’s got his work cut out to get them into shape ahead of the new campaign.

One moment that really summed up their night was when Dele Alli missed an open goal from two yards out.

After a decent passage of play down the right-flank, the ball is zipped across the six-yard box in the direction of Alli who’d found himself acres of space.

The ball slips through the grasp of the keeper and the nearest defender but Alli seemingly tries to tap it home with outside of his right foot, only to send it wide of the post.

Whether he couldn’t sort his feet out in time or was just being lackadaisical, we aren’t sure. But the disappointing nature of the miss is comparable to his Everton career to date in many ways.

“Sums up Everton’s evening,” the commentator said – and we couldn’t have put it any better ourselves.
