Biopics appear to be greatly in fashion at the moment, and it was only a matter of time before the iconic ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson got a representation of his eventful life and career on the big screen. The former undisputed heavyweight world champion is being played by Trevante Rhodes in the upcoming Hulu docu-series ‘MIKE’ that will air from August 25.The two-minute trailer that has recently been released has got boxing fans around the world very excited to see the biopic, which appears to depict Tyson’s whole life story from his difficult childhood to the dizzying heights of his international fame. The eight-episode limited series comes from the same creative team that were behind 'Pam & Tommy', which has just received 10 Emmy nominations. And based on the incredible 'MIKE' trailer, it wouldn’t be surprising if the boxing biopic receives the same level of applause and credit.Regarding the angle that will be taken towards the legendary boxer’s controversial life, showrunner Karen Gist has claimed: “We were never trying to say that Mike Tyson is a hero or Mike Tyson is a villain. Our goal was to take a very complicated and controversial figure and try to get under the hood of what he was praised and vilified for while staying true to our North Star of 'no one person is one thing.'”

The series itself has not been stranger to controversy, however, with Tyson having publicly condemned Hulu for the creation of the series without his consent or participation, and for providing no compensation to the boxer himself.

The International Boxing Hall of Famer posted on Instagram last year: “To make this announcement during Black History Month only confirms Hulu’s concern for dollars over respect for black story rights. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to black experiences especially after all that has transpired in 2020. The real Mike Tyson authorised story is in development and will be announced in coming days. Hulu to announce stealing a black athletes story during Black History month couldn’t be more inappropriate or tone deaf."

Tyson continued blasting Hulu with another post, arguing: “These actions taken by Hulu are just the tip of the iceberg. We shouldn’t be surprised by these abhorrent actions as they represent systemic racism that has plagued Hollywood for its entire existence. These corporate giants hide behind ploys and praise themselves for offering tone-deaf attempts at diversity and inclusion like Hulu’s “Black Stories” playlist that recommends stories about Black culture to viewers on the app. Yet behind closed doors they steal stories from the Black community.”

Therefore, while many Mike Tyson fans may rightfully follow his calls to boycott Hulu and avoid watching the series, one cannot deny how good the new trailer looks in depicting the up-and-down life and career of The Baddest Man on the Planet.
